Which AFSC has the Smartest People?

Which AFSC has the smartest people? I have no idea. The ASVAB is not an intelligence test, it’s an aptitude test, which estimates your ability to learn certain types of skills and excel at certain types of jobs.

Does a higher ASVAB score mean that a person is smarter than someone who has a low score? Not necessarily. It could mean they studied more, perform better on standardized multiple choice tests, tried harder, cared more, got a better night’s sleep than the other person, etc.

All that being said, I’ve compiled a sort-able table that shows you which AFSC’s have the highest ASVAB scorers. It shows the raw number of people in the career field that made a score in that range, as well as the percentage of the career field with that score and the total number of people in that career field.

Also, I only factored in the overall AFQT score. People with a low overall AFQT score could have scored highly in the mechanical category for instance, it just didn’t translate over to an overall high AFQT score.

Five “smartest” AFSCs by ASVAB score as percentage of career field scoring a 93 or higher:

1. 9S100 – Technical Applications Specialist
2. 1N3X1 – Cryptologic Linguist
3. 1A8X1 – Airborne Cryptologic Linguist
4. 3N2X1 – Premier Band
5. 3N1X1 – Regional Band

Explanation: The first three have some of the highest ASVAB requirements of any job in the Air Force, so of course they are going to have higher average numbers. They are also very technical career fields that require someone able to learn difficult material quickly.

Premier and regional band members usually come into the Air Force with bachelor’s or master’s degrees and are already professional musicians, so they have a great deal more education than the average enlistee.

Five “dumbest” AFSCs by ASVAB score as percentage of career field scoring a 93 or higher:

1. 3S1X1 – Military Equal Opportunity
2. 5R0X1 – Chaplain Assistant
3. 2T0X1 – Traffic Management
4. 1C0X1 – Airfield Management
5. 3M0X1 – Services

Explanation: Again, the ASVAB is not an intelligence test. There are plenty of smart people in these career fields, they just may not test well, they may not have studied for the ASVAB, they may be someone that likes to work with their hands more than learn languages or perform technical calculations, etc.

3/5 of these jobs are also open to non-citizens, which may mean that they are ESL (English as a Second Language) which would have a large impact on their ability to do well on the ASVAB.
